Font Title Research & Analysis

September 30, 2016 Unknown 0 Comments

I have chosen ‘Aurora’ as the title of our film because it is based around the fictional planet of Aurora and it’s not an everyday work which is what you’d expect in science-fiction films. Different names in sci-fi and adventure films have unusual or uncommon names and by using an uncommon name, we can indicate to the audience that this is a science-fiction film.

Having looked at different science-fiction and adventure film titles, we found that much of them used a sans serif font that was bold. They generally used one colour in the font, however, some uses one extra colour to either outline the text or to add an effect to it. We will want to be recreating something similar so that our film title further indicates that our film is an adventure and sci-fi. Instead of using a solid font, we’ve realises that some film titles have a texture to make it look worn or give it a metallic look.

Below are different fonts types which have been slightly edited to indicate more of a sci-fi adventure film. (original font on the left and edited font on the right)

Century Gothic

BigNoodleTitling

Filth of Icarus 2

War is Over

HACKED

Earth Orbiter

Questionnaire Research and Analysis

September 23, 2016 Unknown 0 Comments

I carried out a questionnaire on 20 random individuals to help me decide on the target audience for the film and the type of things they are expecting in a specific genres. This research and analysis will be very helpful for me as it's good to see what your likely target audience will think about your film ideas and what they will be expecting. This will allow us to make small changes to our film trailer which intern will make our final products more appealing.

1) How old are you?

2) Are you Male or Female?

3) Which genre is most appealing to you?

4) Which film plot appeals to you the most?

5) What would you expect in an Action & Adventure film? (choose 2)

6) What would you expect in a Science-Fiction film? (choose 2)

7) What locations would you expect in a Science-Fiction film? (choose 2)

8) What locations would you expect in an Adventure film? (choose 2)

9) What locations would you expect in an Action film? (choose 2)

10) What location would you expect in a Thriller film? (choose 2)

From our questionnaire research and analysis, we found out that the majority of our target audience will likely be males from the ages of 12 to 17. The most appealing genres amongst our target audience is Action & Adventure and Science-Fiction and our least liked includes Romance and Horror. This shows us that out film trailer will have to be in the realm of action, adventure and sci-fi. Next we proceed to ask our surveyors to pick which, out of our four, plots is most appealing. (Initial Film Plots - HERE). All of the plots are a sci-fi genre. Plots 1 and 2 are a little similar, however plot 1 includes more action whereas plot 2 contains more adventure. Plot 3 is primarily a sci-fi, thriller and adventure and then plot 4 is a sci-fi, adventure. From the results graph of question 4, we can tell that the most liked plots are 4 and 2. This is a good indication that my film should be a science-fiction and adventure because the plots with these genres were the most appealing.

From question 5 and on-wards, we asked what they would expect in a certain genre and which location was suitable for that genre. We allowed the surveyors to choose two because this gave us more information about what we could include in our film. In a science-fiction and Action&Adventure film, our target audience expected to see futuristic technology, spaceships, explosions fight scenes and destruction. For us, explosions and destruction may only be possible through CGI (computer generated imagery) but this may be difficult for us recreate. Luckily, our target audience equally expected to see chase and fight scenes and danger which something we could potentially include. The main location the audience expected to see in sci-fi, adventure, action and thriller genres are space, other worlds, the future, the woods, large cities.

Location Research

September 16, 2016 Unknown 0 Comments

The genre for my film, Aurora, is a science-fiction, adventure and thriller. As it's a sci-fi and adventure film, it will need different settings to make it look the part as well. From my initial ideas and storyboarding, you can see that some of the locations are set on Earth and on the planet of Aurora. As the filming is only done on here on Earth, I will need a way of making it clear to the audience that they are on a different planet. I could do this is different ways. The first way in which I could achieve this is by adding objects such as flying vehicles, planet's, unusual plants and trees. Another way this can be done is by changing the colour scheme of the two different scenes. I could give Earth a warm orange tint and Aurora can be given a purple hue to make it seem unusual, connoting to a sci-fi film.

For my location research, I have gone out and taken several photos of locations that may be suitable for my film.

All these images have been colour graded inside of Adobe Photoshop to give it a unique look. The first two images have had their blue channels reduced to remove the cold and winter feel, and their red and green have been boosted to give it a warm feeling as if it's summer. The third image has had it greens reduced and its reds and blues enhanced to give it a winter/autumn look. The final two images are from the same location but from the colour schemes, they look as if they are in two different locations. One of them had had its blues and reds increased, and green reduces which gave it an overall purple hue. This makes the scene look cold as if it's winter. The last image used more reds and green, with reduced blue, to give it a green atmosphere to make the location seem unusual and mysterious. This could be used as a genre indication to connote a sci-fi and thriller film, and the unusual location will help connote adventure and sci-fi.

Initial Film Ideas - Storyboards

September 12, 2016 Unknown 0 Comments

This is the initial storyboard for Plot number 4 as well as a bit of Plot 2. This shows the general way forward for my A2 film and these shots will also change in the future depending on feedback from our target audience and our availability on location, characters, props and time.

Below is our initial story boarding for the trailer.

Mood Board

This image if a science-fiction concept art which depicts several alien spaceships flying in space above a planet. This also shows adventure because it is located in space. The genre for my film/trailer may be a science-fiction and adventure film because this appeals to a large target audience of around 11-25. I may also have to use visual effects and CGI (computer generated imagery) but this also depends on the storyline of the film and our capabilities.

This is a concept art image from Disney  fantasy, action & adventure, Maleficent. This show contains genre indicators that strongly correlate to the  genres of adventure and fantasy. The large  open expanse of land is an indication of an adventure. In the background in a weird looking mountain or building in the background. This also indicates adventure because as the audience, we expect to be taken to that place .

This sci-fi concept art denotes an alien world where other large planets are visible in the sky. The planets in the sky are strong genre indicators of a science-fiction film. Large open  also hint towards an adventure and may be a suitable location to film in there are suitable locations that we could film at. For my A2 Medial film trailer, I could implement planets in the sky to connote a sci-fi. With my technical abilities, I believe I will be able to pull off a shot like this.

The two images, below shows post-apocalyptic images of different cities that have been run down and left in ruins. These post-apocalyptic concept arts connote a thriller, sci-fi and adventure film. From these images the audience can only question what happened there. As post-apocalyptic thriller and sci-fi film may be hard to create because finding large cities that are lightly populated is quite hard. Even finding an abandoned location like a house will be hard. Visual effects could help create a post-apocalyptic feel by adding more green grass and cracked concrete textures on different surfaces however that may take a considerable more about of time that just adding a few CG effects.

In this image, we see a long shot of a person standing face to face with a large robot. The robot is a genre indicator for a science-fiction film. Having robots in our film will be hard because it requires a good understanding of 3D editing and compositing software like Adobe After Effects , Photoshop. A few shots may be acceptable for us to pull off but a featured film contain robot everywhere may make it difficult for us to do because it will be very time-consuming.

Initial Film Ideas - Plots

September 12, 2016 Unknown 0 Comments

All these are only initial ideas and act as a start point for a film plot which will intern help me create a trailer. All these plots are subject to change depending on their availability and our ability to find suitable locations, actors and props.

Plot 1
A young teen is out late at night and sees a small meteor shower in the night sky. All the shooting stars fly over the sky, however, one heads towards him and lands near his area. As they seek out and finds small impact site, he comes into contact with / takes an item from something in the meteor, which gives him special abilities and powers. Throughout the film, the protagonist character figures out he could use his powers to help people but somewhere through the film, an antagonist character arrives on earth looking this person / item. With this person / item that holds an emcee amount of power, the antagonist characters don’t plan to use the item for a good cause. It is then up to the protagonist to save the world from being destroyed.  Throughout the film, he manages to find other people with similar abilities that obtained their powers the same way.

Plot 2
A young teen in cycling in the woods and they stumble across something unusual. As they approach it, they are met be a small flying robot that surprises him at first but later finds that it’s quite friendly. Throughout the film, the robot becomes the companion of the main character. During the film the protagonist and the robot fight crime, but somewhere during the film, a group of robots arrive at earth from another planted in search of this robot. The robot companion has the special key which it must protect from the robot invaders because the key allows it to activate a super massive alien space ship which can destroy planets and even some solar systems. The robot invaders are at war with another robot group (friendly robots). Originally it belonged to both robot species however through conflict between the groups, this sparked a war between then. The friendly robots wished to use the ship to protest the universe and keep everything at peace and harmony whereas the evil robots wanted to use the ship to grow their kingdom and take over the universe. The little companion robot, named Kyro, was sent to Earth to keep the key safely hidden away until the war had ended.

Plot 3
The year is 2164 and the advancements in technology and medical science has allowed scientists to cure every disease and virus with one super drug created by a famous and well regarded scientist – Dr. Kurt. Everyone is administered the super drug at birth, allowing everyone to live their life without fear of any illness however on 2164, marking the 100th anniversary of the creation of the super drug, the creators had a plan to take over the world using the drug. For a century, the creators, including Dr. Kurt, had mixed another ingredient within the drug that allowed them to take control others. Since everyone in the world has been given the super drug, they essentially had control of the whole world except or a very small percentage of people who had a mutated gene in the DNA that disallowed the ingredient from taking control of then. Less than 1% of the world population had this mutation but this meant they also have a mutation which gave them special powers and abilities. The creators did everything in their power to eliminate everyone with these mutations, saying that these people were ‘could not be cured and may cause others to become ill’, as a cover up for the actual truth. A young teen with the mutation manages to evade being captured and through the film he, along with others with the mutation, must stop the antagonists from taking over the world.

Plot 4
Set in the future, 2554, a young teen is cycling in the woods when he is startled by something in the woods. As the thing emerges from the woods, he realises it’s a flying robot. The robot is from another planet in another galaxy, where it has been searching across the universe to find this teen. The teen's name is Nick Aries, and his father died before he was born however he never knew his dad or what he was like. As the robot teleports Nick Aries to a different planet, he finds out that his father was the hero and saviour of their planet. He found out that on the day of his birth, the planet was attacked by the antagonist group named Exir, who were known for destroying worlds to gather resources that made then stronger as they ruled the evilest and darkest parts of the universe. The planet of Aurora fought relentlessly against Exir as they tried to capture Nick because he’s acquired special powers that were passed down from his parents. His father, captain of the Aurorean Interstellar Army, fought their rivals to protect the future of the planet and his son. As the antagonist group got closer and closer to defeating them, Nicks mum (while pregnant) was evacuated from the planet and was sent across the universe to a random planet. As Nicks dad was still fighting the antagonists, they wear slowly losing so in a final bid to save the planet his father used one of the most powerful and destructive objects, a black hole, to defeat them however it cost him his life. They had sent out 1000’s of drones to search the universe to find him and now that they have, they want him to return to the home planet. They want him to return to the planet and to join the Interstellar Army and protect them, and other, planets from a growing enemy formally known as Exir.

Our AS Film Institute

For our AS film institute, we decided upon the name ‘Whitehorn Productions’. We wanted to create a logo that was similar to Paramount Pictures, Lions Gate Entertainment and 20th Century Fox as their films may have similar genres to our film – which maybe an action, thriller and war film.

Our Final A2 Institution - Guardian Entertainment
I chose to have two institutions in our A2 film trailer as this shows that audience that it is going to be a larger production film. This may also make our target audience more likely to watch the film knowing that it is a larger production film. Our second film institution is names 'Guardian Entertainment' as it sound appealing and professional to our audience.

Below is the logo for 'Guardian Entertainment'
